The Saint Vigor de Mieux
Chapel, with its rustic charm which harmonises so
well with the farms surrounding it, was already in
existence at the end of the 13th century. Restored
in the 15th century by Guillaume de Vanembras, it
has been modified and added to over the centuries.
Members of the Vanembras
family were buried in the nave up to 1737; some of
the plaques are still visible.
The chapel fell into ruins
and was closed to the public in 1983. During his first
visit in 1987, the Japanese artist Kyoji Tabuko fell
in love with the place and decided to make it into
a work of art. Work began in 1992, with the backing
of numerous French and Japanese sponsors. |

The
framework was restored first, then the roof structure, and
then came the completion of the roof: old tiles were added;
rainbow-coloured glass tiles. The floor was made of "Cor-Ten"
steel, the walls covered with lead sheets on which the artist
applied numerous layers of different-coloured paint. On
the last layer (white) he drew apple tree branches and scraped
off the paint with a tool which he had invented, to reveal
the colours of Normandy apple trees through the coloured
layers.
Exhibitions,
concerts and Franco-Japanese events take place in the Chapel
in the summer.
